Carol Wain (Director)

I have had a full and vibrant psychotherapy practice at the Centre since 2005. I have had over 25 years of clinical experience in the NHS, voluntary sector and private practice working with a very wide range of mental health issues with clients from very diverse backgrounds. I work short, medium and long-term with individuals (18+), couples and groups.

I see my job as a psychotherapist as offering you an accepting and curious space within which we can work together to explore and make the changes that you would like in your life. It is a space to reflect, explore, question, experiment and create new possibilities of thinking, feeling and behaving to heal and enhance your life. Psychotherapy is about both your present life and the influence of your history in shaping you. It is also an opportunity to reflect upon and examine how you relate to yourself and others and to develop your capacities to love, work and play well. I give particular attention to how the environment affects our mental health. This includes the cultural, economic and socio-political influences, the transpersonal/spiritual dimensions and our relationship with the natural environment.

I have Advanced training and experience in Ecological Psychotherapy so offer psychotherapy in natural spaces in the outdoor environment. See www.theredkite.net for more about eco therapy and the training/supervision that I offer.

I am a UKCP registered Psychotherapist with the Integrative and Humanistic Psychotherapy College. I am a Certified Transactional Analyst (CTA) and hold an MSc in TA Psychotherapy. I have a background in Psychology and am also trained and qualified in other approaches eg. Schema therapy, mindfulness, eco psychotherapy. which I integrate into my work. I have always been and remain very committed to my ongoing personal and professional development.

Supervision and Training

I have a growing Clinical supervision practice. I am endorsed as a Provisional Teaching Supervising Transactional Analyst (PTSTA).

I am the Training Director of a Registered TA Psychotherapy Training Institute Red Kite Training in South Liverpool. I was awarded a UKATA medal in 2021 for my service and contributions to the TA community.

A bit more about me…

I have a rich cultural heritage and an international background. I enjoy a very active and diverse life outside of being a therapist. I have served as a trustee of Liverpool Anglican Cathedral for the last 9 years. I am particularly interested in the interplay between neuroscience and human development, the development of self, the transpersonal and the connection between psychotherapy and the outdoor/environment.

Emile Joubert

I am a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor with a Postgraduate Diploma in Transactional Analysis Psychotherapy, and a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

I am also a member of UKATA and UKCP.

I work using an integrative approach of Transactional Analysis and Person Centred counselling both of which provide a rich, wide range framework to support therapy.

I offer a therapeutic space where each individual’s uniqueness is welcome, honoured and celebrated.

At the heart of my philosophy is the belief that on some level, consciously or not, every human is in contact with their life force, constantly encouraging them to grow and develop.

My role is to support clients develop their awareness of how they relate to themselves, to the world and to others, and to explore and understand their emotions, whether these relate to anxiety, depression, trauma or loss, and potentially bring the changes needed to feel differently.

I am also deeply interested in the multifaceted aspect of human personalities, as well as in the existential questions that impact our lives and mental health: our role and place in the world, our contexts, choices, responsibility, time, freedom, loss, the quest for meaning, beliefs and cultures as a few examples.

Part of my practice takes place outdoor, to include the natural space and vitality into the therapeutic work.

Emily Tattersall

I am a Therapeutic Counsellor trained in Transactional Analysis Psychotherapy from South Manchester Centre for Psychotherapy and also have a Certificate in Person Centred Counselling from Counselling Training Liverpool.  I am a current member of BACP and regularly attend conferences and short courses to build upon my knowledge with a view to provide the best service possible to my clients.

I joined the LPCC Team in January 2021 after working 2 years part time as a Counsellor for a charity in Liverpool.

I provide counselling and psychotherapy to adult individuals with a variety of presenting issues including anxiety, bereavement, depression and trauma, to name a few.  My approach is one of warmth, empathy and understanding. I am sensitive to the client’s needs and process, all while working towards healing, positive outcomes and self-awareness for the client.

I have a passion to see people become the best version of themselves; to reach their potential in life and to resolve any hinderances or obstacles that prevent them in doing this, this includes examining a person’s view of themselves, others and the world.

Erika Gunderson

I am a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor who has been trained in person-centred and psychodynamic counselling theory. I am aware that emotions can often feel overwhelming, confusing and frustrating and I aim to be a supportive, empathic and authentic presence within the counselling space. Through building a relationship, it is my aim that clients may be able to gain insight and a greater understanding of themselves.

I am a registered member with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and am working towards accreditation. I received my Bachelor’s of Science in Counselling and Human Services from The University of Scranton in 2017. I then went on to pursue a Master’s degree in Counselling and Interpersonal Dialogue from the University of Edinburgh and received my Master’s degree in 2019.  My counselling experience is broad, ranging from short term to long term clients.

George Hopkinson

Life can be incredibly difficult. Whether we like it or not, we are all likely to experience anger, stress, pain, loss and despair. This could be after a traumatic or difficult event or simply because something just doesn’t seem right at this time. Whatever your challenges are, I believe that talking therapy can help.

I am a psychotherapeutic counsellor and work with individual adults who are looking to make changes in their lives. I am qualified in integrative counselling and experienced at working with a wide range of people with challenges such as depression, anxiety, self-identity and relationships. I am also specifically trained to work with people who have experienced one or multiple traumatic life events such as being exposed to violence or sexual abuse.

I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and support my practice by regularly completing additional training and continuous professional development.

Graham Fass

Upon completing my postgraduate studies in Transactional Analysis at SMCP (South Manchester Centre for Psychotherapy), I now practise as a psychotherapeutic counsellor adhering to the ethical frameworks of both the BACP and UKATA. I am a fully registered member of the BACP.

I spent a number of years volunteering at Age UK, Wirral. In that time, I have worked with adult clients with various presenting issues. I also work in education as a counsellor at a specialist independent school that supports children (ages 7 to 16 years) with such things as autism (ASC), learning difficulties and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Besides my experience of working as a therapist, I have worked in the private sector, in a high stress environment for over two decades. This experience has given me an insight into managing stress and finding work-life balance first-hand.

My way of working encompasses the philosophical values of TA, in that all humans are inherently ‘OK’ and that we all have the power to change.

My perspective on the therapeutic relationship is that the therapist’s role is a facilitator for positive change, creating a safe space for the client to feel trusted and understood. This in turn gives my clients an environment in which they can grow, and learn the tools they can use in order to challenge negative patterns of behaviour and beliefs.

Most of us are familiar with the term ‘downward spiral’ in the context of life; how about a new narrative in which we spiral upwards through healing and positive change?

I currently offer therapy for adults, couples, and adolescents (11 years old and above).

Areas and issues that I can support include:

  • Family systems

  • Recovery from abusive relationships

  • Improving low mood and anxiety

  • Childhood trauma

  • Increasing assertiveness and challenging procrastination

  • Self-esteem and body confidence

  • Improving self-care (physical and mental wellness)

  • Managing stress and energy levels

  • Managing aggression and anger

  • Bereavement

  • Serious and terminal illness such as cancer and fibromyalgia

  • Autism & ADHD

  • Men’s issues

  • Sexuality and sexual related issues

Who I work with

I work with you and what you bring. This may be a wish to explore a nagging sense of dissatisfaction, anxiety or discomfort, or to alleviate feelings of grief, pain or sadness. You may be struggling with the memories and effects of past experiences, or be seeking support at a crossroads or with a challenging decision. You may feel frustrated and exhausted, attempting to solve the seemingly unsolvable or feel it is time change unhelpful patterns or habits. You may bring all or some of the above, or something different.

My Approach

I offer a warm and friendly, supportive space for you to explore whatever is on your mind. My approach is non-judgemental, client focussed and collaborative. I believe that we are all experts on ourselves and that there is great transformative power and relief when we feel truly seen and heard. Whatever you bring, I will meet you where you are at this moment, taking your needs and sensibilities into account in the pace and depth of the work we do. I will work with you collaboratively and compassionately in an atmosphere of empathy, flexibility, and safety.

About Me

I am passionate about counselling and psychotherapy as a means of self-discovery and transformation. Before qualifying as a therapist I worked in community arts programmes, delivering projects around personal health and social education. Alongside my therapy practice, I also work within communications skills courses tackling difficult conversations within hospitals and hospices. My experience as a therapist includes working with neurodivergence, parenting, eating disorders, illness, stress, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, self-esteem and spirituality. In addition to private clients, I have volunteered for Tomorrow’s Women, Sunflowers Cancer Support and Wirral Mind. I have a special interest in the challenges faced by parents and carers of children with extra needs and I am a passionate advocate for education and awareness of autism and neurodivergence.

Helen Fleming

I am a BACP Registered Psychotherapeutic Counsellor and I hold an Advanced Postgraduate Diploma in Psychotherapy (Transactional Analysis). I am also a Registered Mental Health Nurse with 30 years’ experience.

I have worked with clients experiencing a wide range of mental health problems and emotional difficulties that have impacted their day to day lives and relationships. I have specific expertise working with individuals experiencing issues relating to addiction.

I am passionate about working collaboratively and l will listen carefully to your concerns and provide support and encouragement for you to address the issues you face and to achieve the personal changes you wish to make in your life.

You may have a particular issue you would like to focus on or perhaps you just have a sense that things aren’t quite right, and you feel that it is the right time to explore why.

I offer a confidential, non- judgemental relationship in which we can explore , reflect upon, and find new ways to deal with these difficulties.

I also offer therapy sessions in outdoor settings which combines the benefits of therapy with the benefits of being outside in nature. For some people outdoor therapy can feel less intimidating than sitting face to face in an office and it can help gain a different perspective on difficulties and expand solutions.

Katie Tonner

I am a BACP Accredited psychotherapist and have been working with clients in private practice for 15 years.
Through my training, I have gained a Diploma in Counselling, a 1 year certificate of CBT and four years accredited training in Transactional Analysis psychotherapy. I continue to attend short courses to enhance my work.

My approach is integrative and influenced by the different theories I have studied over the years. I feel that the therapeutic relationship is paramount to therapy and strive for a healthy attachment, based on the core conditions of Person Centred Therapy. Within the relationship, I incorporate many of the concepts of relational Transactional Analysis and work together with the client towards positive change. At times I may use elements and techniques from CBT, particularly to aid symptom relief. Currently I work on a one to one basis with adult clients.

Lisa Orange

My Qualifications and Experience

I am a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor with a Diploma in Transactional Analysis. I am a registered member of BACP (MBACP) and also a member of UKATA and UKCP. I have been practicing as a therapist since 2018 and have over 18 years of experience working in various roles - supporting adults, students, young people and families, including 5 years as a social worker in mental health. This role gave me valuable insight and experience. Although I was passionate about working in the area of mental health, I wanted to be able to work in a more psychological, relational and creative way than a statutory mental health setting allowed. This has led me to retrain in psychotherapy and I have certainly found my calling in this line of work.

About me

I am married with two primary school aged children. Parenting keeps me on my toes! I’m passionate about it and always learning. My interest in parenting also overlaps and inspires my therapy practice. Childhood experiences are unique and can be wonderfully precious as well as painful and traumatic. It is a privilege as a therapist to be trusted with these experiences.

I enjoy being outside in nature, whether its walking in my local area or going further afield to spend the afternoon at the beach. Being in nature has many therapeutic benefits which is one of the reasons I love it!

I also have my own, well-travelled, therapy journey. I know how it feels to start this process and it has been transformational for me.

How I work

If you decide to work with me you will experience an empathic and warm approach that is open, creative, curious and non-judgemental. I provide a safe space for you to be listened to, and for us to explore together whatever you want to bring. I view the therapy process as helping you develop a deeper understanding of who you are and how you relate to others. I also work with you to learn and discover new perspectives and tools, enabling you to grow and move forward.

Louise Ralston

I have been in private practice since 2018 and I work with individuals and couples aged 18+. I am a Certified Transactional Analyst (CTA) in Psychotherapy and a registered member of UKCP.

I create a safe and inclusive space that is accepting and empowering for all people. I help people to increase understanding of themselves and how their past impacts their present. Then increase understanding of how they can help and support themselves in the here and now so that they become free to live a full life in the present and future.

I have a lot of experience in working with Depression and Anxiety. I have also supported and worked with;

  • Anger management

  • Bereavement

  • Disordered eating

  • Neurodiversity

  • OCD

  • Personal development

  • Relationship problems

  • Self-esteem

  • Self-harm

  • Stress

  • Suicidal ideation

  • Trauma

  • Women’s issues

My areas of interest include trauma and neuroscience. I regularly attend workshops, conferences and cpd groups.

Prior to private practice I was a voluntary counsellor at a charity. Before training in Psychotherapy I worked in education where I enjoyed helping people to meet their potential.

Maeta Brown

I am an NCPS registered relational therapist with a background in crisis and trauma work and a Masters in Psychotherapy and Counselling from the University of Leeds. I work integratively, drawing from a range of therapeutic approaches, underpinned by non-judgmental respect and compassion.

I recognise how challenging it can be to reach out in times of distress and place great importance on building a relationship of safety, acceptance and trust with clients.  I work in a trauma informed way to help clients explore the different parts of themselves with compassion and curiosity, within the context of the experiences and relationships that have shaped them. It is from this place of acceptance and understanding that lasting change can be fostered. My experiences, both professional and personal, have left me with the profound belief that no matter how difficult things are, there is always the potential for hope and change.

I have experience working with a wide range of issues in both adults and young people age 11+. I have a background in mental health crisis work and years of experience working therapeutically with adults and young people experiencing severe emotional distress and trauma before training to be a therapist.

I have worked in private practice since 2018 as well as working in schools and the charity sector and running the psychotherapy service at Harrogate Homeless Project. I am committed to my ongoing personal and professional development and engage in regular additional training and CPD.

Paul Betney

Qualifications

I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the United Kingdom Association for Transactional Analysis (UKATA). I am trained in Transactional Analysis and hold a Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling and an Advanced Postgraduate Diploma in Psychotherapy.

Before joining LPCC I worked at the Liverpool based Brain Charity helping people to come to terms with and manage a wide variety of challenging neurological conditions and brain injuries. Although I have a background in working with people with medical conditions and health anxiety, I have experience in working with a wide variety of issues beyond health.

I am firmly committed to ongoing personal and professional development and engage in regular clinical supervision to ensure I am providing you with the very best service possible.

My approach

I have lived with Parkinson’s Disease for almost 30 years. Having Parkinson’s does not mean I have all the answers, but it does mean I have had to ask myself a lot of the questions. The therapy I have undertaken on my own journey has been invaluable in helping me to navigate what has often been a physically and emotionally difficult journey. That’s why I decided to become a therapist and it’s why I am so passionate about supporting people who find themselves in any state of emotional distress. Working together, with empathy and without judgment, in a safe, supportive and confidential environment, we can explore your experience and find a way forward that works for you.

About me

Prior to my work as a therapist, I spent 18 years in the Civil Service, working primarily in training and talent development. I enjoy boxing, running and weight training. In 2013 I sailed across the Atlantic ocean on the tall ship TS Pelican of London and in 2018 I sailed across the Pacific ocean, from New Zealand to the Falkland Islands, on the tall ship Tenacious. In 2022 I performed a one man show at the Unity Theatre in Liverpool which examined my personal experiences with Parkinson’s Disease and family trauma.

Peter Dinsmore

I am a very experienced and professional therapist with over twelve thousand client contact hours behind me in individual, couples and group work, I feel my experience coupled with my life experiences makes me the therapist and person I am today. My training in the person - centred approach (3 years) and in Transactional Analysis (7 years) together with continuing personal and professional development and supervision give me a strong theoretical and experiential approach to bring to my client work. I work very much in a relational way (research indicates that the therapeutic relationship is key to positive therapy outcomes).

I help people with a broad range of issues and feel my warmth and genuineness go a long way to creating the rapport and safety required in the therapy setting. I offer a space to explore and challenge the many problems people bring with the aim of finding acceptable outcomes for them. This can be done at a pace and time to suit them.

I can work short or long term to match peoples needs and situations. I understand that life can be stressful at times but giving yourself time and space to explore what is happening for you can be the remedy required. I believe open and genuine communication in relationship can bring about significant outcomes.

Dip therapeutic counselling, member of BACP

Sally Holloway

I have been practising as a therapist for 6 years and have an advanced diploma in psychotherapeutic counselling. I have also completed advanced clinical training in Children and Young people's psychotherapy. My training is rooted in Transactional Analysis, but I use lots of different approaches in my work.

Many years as a foster carer has led to a particular interest in trauma and attachment work but I have experience working with a wide range of problems. My approach to therapy is a relational one and I believe the therapeutic relationship to be at the heart of the work I do.

Stephen McLaughlin

I am a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor and Registered Member of BACP (MBACP) with a Post Graduate Diploma and an Advanced Diploma in Transactional Analysis, as well as a qualification in Person Centred Counselling Skills.

Joining LPCC in 2019, I approach my work with skill and compassion, offering the opportunity to be listened to without being judged. I provide a space for my clients in which even the most difficult thoughts, feelings, behaviours, and experiences can be shared, explored, and reflected upon with empathy and respect.

Prior to qualifying as a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor, I undertook volunteer work for over 10 years providing listening services to people in distress. Volunteering through several organisations, I gained vital experience supporting people who were struggling with a wide range of issues, but especially younger people, people who were self-harming, and people who were experiencing suicidal thoughts and feelings. Since qualifying I have built on this experience and work with all kinds of clients, including those struggling with anxiety, anger, trauma, overwhelm, and difficulty feeling and expressing emotions.

I work with clients from many backgrounds, but I make special mention that I welcome work with LGBTQIA+ people and with neurodivergent people.

I have a degree in Literature, and I have always been interested in stories. Therapeutically, I am interested in the stories that we tell ourselves about ourselves and about the world, and how those stories help or hinder us as we go through life. I will work with you to better understand your story and to strengthen your knowledge and understanding of yourself so that you can make real changes in your life, in your relationships with others, and in your relationship with yourself.

Tim Burch

I am a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor who is registered with BACP.  I started training in 2012 and completed 4 years of Transactional Analysis Psychotherapy training in South Manchester. I began working at LPCC in August 2020 and was delighted to have joined the team.

I have also been a secondary school teacher for the past 25 years working in both private and state schools. I have very much enjoyed helping to develop children's full potential, this has been very rewarding. This experience has helped inform my practice as a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor. I also enjoy helping people work through their issues in a friendly non-judgemental atmosphere. I have had particular experience helping people work through issues with depression and anxiety using the Transactional Analysis modality. I find it very fulfilling to see clients overcome difficulties in these areas and begin to live life more fully.
